Thoughtful Thursday, 14 of July

Welcome to Thoughtful Thursday!

This week my question is deceptively easy: why do you read? What do you look for in a book? Is it an escapism pure or simple or something beyond that ? What is more important to you: an interesting plotline, great philosophical remarks, characters you can relate to, action-packed plot or maybe just those steamy sex scenes and never-ending HEAs ?

Here are some quotes and pics I found about reading and liked enough to post here:

“To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.”
A C Grayling, Financial Times (in a review of A History of Reading by Alberto Manguel)

“The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who'll get me a book I ain't read.”
 Abraham Lincoln

"She understood now why her friend Elizabeth, with her near-genius, analytical mind gave wide berth to murder mysteries, psychological thrillers, and horror stories, and read only romance novels. Because, by God, when a woman picked up one of those steamy books, she had a firm guarantee that there would be a Happily-Ever-After. That though the world outside those covers could bring such sorrow and disappointment and loneliness, between those covers, the world was a splendid place to be."
—Karen Marie Moning

“To read a writer is for me not merely to get an idea of what he says, but to go off with him and travel in his company.”
- Andre Gide

“Give me a man or woman who has read a thousand books and you give me an interesting companion. Give me a man or woman who has read perhaps three and you give me a dangerous enemy indeed.”
- Anne Rice, The Witching Hour

“Reading is sometimes an ingenious device for avoiding thought.”
- Arthur Helps

“No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading, or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.”
- Confucius

“The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest men of the past centuries.”
- Descartes

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
- Groucho Marx

“The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read.”
- Mark Twain

“I divide all readers into two classes: Those who read to remember and those who read to forget.”
- William Phelps

“All the best stories in the world are but one story in reality -- the story of escape. It is the only thing which interests us all and at all times, how to escape.”
- Arthur Christopher Benson

  2. I read mainly to escape. Life sucks more often than not and books help me cope with the ridiculousness of it all. Still, sometimes my genre pick depends on my mood. I just went through a dirty paranormal romance phase, using the Demonica series by Larissa Ione to curb the craving. I don't know what mood will hit me next, but it may be more demons. Sometimes I need contemporary romance and sometimes I need dark DARK fantasy. I usually always try to steer clear of anything too sad though. I don't mind bittersweet, but sad is not my thing...most of the time anyway.

  3. Why do I read? Because it's the most fun you can have on your own! I read for fun, I read to explore, to learn something new, to relearn something I used to know, to try to put myself in someone elses' shoes, and yes, I read to escape.

Love the Marx quote and totally agree!, disagree with the Helps quote - reading always makes me think - even if it's only 'this book is dire, why am I bothering with it?' (at which point I stop reading)

  4. The Red Witch, it's also escape for me. Pure and simple. Always.

Lena I am pleased you liked them! Sure, use those you find the most appropriate!

Jen, yes, live sucks but even if it didn't I would still read my books. I can relate when it comes to reading romances or dark fantasy when the right mood strikes you! ;) Wait, did I say romance? Oh dear, apage satanas!

Tracy, Arthur Helps added "sometimes" and I find it to be the crucial word in his quote. I must agree with him - sometimes I read just to not think about some problems and issues, especially those I can do nothing about.

  5. Great quotes :)

I too read to escape, because I am bored, and because I love new worlds

  6. I love new worlds and new words too - reading might speed up your language skills without you noticing it. Isn't it lovely?

  7. I love the KMM quote. Also Groucho Marx: Outside of a dog, man's best friend is a book. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

  8. Oh, I love your quote Melissa, thanks! Inside a dog it is definitely too dark to read but what are these little penlights for...;). Never forget one when you go inside your dog and you will be just fine!

  9. Hmm, now I started reading because I had nothing better to do and found I loved fantasy. But then it started to become an escape from the gloomy world. I got tired of the awful news. And tv was getting boring too. I got lost in a book and never found my way out of them. ;D I love reading a good story that takes me away somewhere new and exciting. I like dreaming the crazy things that happen. :)

    Great post and wonderful quotes!

  10. Thanks Melissa (My World...) I definitely can relate with everything you said here - tv is so depressing and boring that sometimes I even don't want to listen to news bulletins, let alone watch them. Movies are good but only from time to time. Books are the ultimate escape.

  11. True - it seemed more black and white when I first read it.Although I'd still say that it gave you something different to think about, rather than avoiding thought altogether :)

  12. Yes, Tracy, avoiding some thoughts by thinking about something else...reading can do that!
