It's the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend - and I spent an hour this morning recording all of the birds seen at any one time in my new garden, and submitted the results. But I didn't see the handsome fella in this photo, he's a beauty! (Birds, don't you love how it's the males that have to be beautiful, the females are usually drab LBJs? I try not to dwell on that as I'm putting my mascara on, and it's below freezing but I'm wearing a thin strappy top and skirt - as I was last night as we went out for a meal with a group of friends, meanwhile my partner and the other men in the group are all wearing jeans)
Blodeuedd you are perfectly right - sit in silence and the birds will come!
Tracy this male bullfinch was photographed by my brother near his flat. Male birds (or cocks) have to be colourful to make the right impression on their females. The hens however are all business, no-nonsense ladies - raising chicks is a serious task after all!
I get a lot of birds in my backyard - no cats and lots of trees and shrubs. I plant stuff for the birds and leave seed heads all winter long. Sometimes there are chickadees sitting on the ledge in front of my dish washing window. I like watching them.
I have a cat but he tends to catch rodents more than birds, thankfully (though he's very partial to pigeon). He sat in the kitchen window watching the birds with me, yesterday (I can see the whole garden from my window), but he had no interest in going outside.
If you're ever over here, anachronist, you're very welcome to sit in my kitchen (or even outside on the patio if it's warm enough) drinking tea, coffee, or even a Pimms, my dear.
*sits in silence*

I hope you had a great night out!
Anachronist - That's a wonderful photo your brother took.
ReplyDeleteYes, we all had a good time, thanks - a celebration for five friends whose birthdays are all within two weeks of each other.

ReplyDeleteChickadees? I had to look it up in my dictionary. I knew "titmouse" but not "chickadee". They come regularly to my balcony.
ReplyDeleteOooh pretty...
ReplyDelete*waves arms wildly*
Sorry, I'm used to making sure my malamute doesn't get the birds. She is highly prey oriented.

ReplyDeleteOh you have an alaskan malamute, Melissa? I love them!
ReplyDeleteMy dog (a york)likes chasing birds too.
Tracy I would like to sit in your kitchen too - such a lovely view!
That's such a pretty bird! My chow, Cinna, sits and stares at birds all day. She's fascinated! :)
ReplyDeleteI see there are more dog lovers here! Chows are almost like little bears - so cute! What colour is yours? I love black ones.

ReplyDeleteThanks Tracy - perhaps one day...
ReplyDeleteHow pretty.
