This particular song (?) saved me more than once from the deepest despair, especially while reading a bad book. Enjoy!
German Text
Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen,
Tod und Verzweiflung flammet um mich her!
Fühlt nicht durch dich Sarastro
Todesschmerzen,
So bist du meine Tochter nimmermehr.
Verstossen sei auf ewig,
Verlassen sei auf ewig,
Zertrümmert sei'n auf ewig
Alle Bande der Natur
Wenn nicht durch dich!
Sarastro wird erblassen!
Hört, Rachegötter,
Hört der Mutter Schwur!
Tod und Verzweiflung flammet um mich her!
Fühlt nicht durch dich Sarastro
Todesschmerzen,
So bist du meine Tochter nimmermehr.
Verstossen sei auf ewig,
Verlassen sei auf ewig,
Zertrümmert sei'n auf ewig
Alle Bande der Natur
Wenn nicht durch dich!
Sarastro wird erblassen!
Hört, Rachegötter,
Hört der Mutter Schwur!
English Translation of "Der Hölle Rache"
The vengeance of Hell boils in my heart,
Death and despair flame about me!
If Sarastro does not through you feel
The pain of death,
Then you will be my daughter nevermore.
Disowned may you be forever,
Abandoned may you be forever,
Destroyed be forever
All the bonds of nature,
If not through you
Sarastro becomes pale! (as death)
Hear, Gods of Revenge,
Hear a mother's oath!
Have you ever seen this opera live? Or on tv? What's your opinion if so?
Death and despair flame about me!
If Sarastro does not through you feel
The pain of death,
Then you will be my daughter nevermore.
Disowned may you be forever,
Abandoned may you be forever,
Destroyed be forever
All the bonds of nature,
If not through you
Sarastro becomes pale! (as death)
Hear, Gods of Revenge,
Hear a mother's oath!
Have you ever seen this opera live? Or on tv? What's your opinion if so?

Can't say I have seen it, but then i have not really ever watch an opera
ReplyDeleteI've never seen an opera, but that's really because I've just never had the chance. The words are beautiful. I want to get lost in their meaning. They really are lovelY!
ReplyDeleteI love this one - she can really hit those high notes! I'm not big on opera, went to see one once (got free tickets - but it was a selection of arias etc from Italian operas, so opera light, rather than a full-blown production) But I enjoyed it - I like opera in small doses.
ReplyDeleteI am planning to see The Magic Flute before I die or maybe eariler. I am not a big opera fan but, being a fan of Mozart, I might survive one of HIS operas I suppose. This aria got me addicted, making me wish I was a coloratura soprano (I am not).
ReplyDeleteWe studied The Magic Flute at school - it really put me off that one!
